Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
The American National Standards In stitute
(ANSI), in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has developed a
presentation to introduce all ANSI-Accredited Standards Developers to the topic
of Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP).
The PowerPoint slideshow is freely
available and will provide information on how voluntary consensus
standards can incorporate EPP provisions to protect the environment, and reflect life-cycle concerns.
Standards developer staff are encouraged
to share the presentation with members
of the development body.
A primary objective of this exercise is to assist the EPA in achieving its agency mission, which is to protect human health and to safe guard the
natural environment — air, water, and
land — upon which life depends.
The EPA wants more standards to incorporate environmental and life-cycle
elements that can be referenced and/or recommended as the basis for both public and private sector purchasing
decisions. This action supports the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act (NTTAA) (P.L. 104-113: 1996) and OMB
Cir cular A-119. American National Standards exceed
all requirements of NTTAA and OMB A-119 to be used as reference documents by federal agencies.
Each ANSI-accredited standards developer with standards that are impacted by
EPP practices is strong ly encouraged to
share the EPP presentation with its members and committee participants.
