| Electric Drive Vehicles Workshop Overview |
On behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Idaho National
Laboratory, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) convened a
standards needs assessment workshop on the codes and standards needed to
facilitate the successful introduction, and wide-spread acceptance and
deployment of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty on-road electric drive vehicles
(EDVs). These are vehicles that must be connected to the electric grid for
recharging of their propulsion energy storage systems, which in most cases will
be batteries.
The workshop considered current and future U.S. domestic, regional, and
international standards, codes, conformity assessment activities, and education
and training initiatives. The workshop provided a neutral environment where all
interested stakeholders could engage in discussions to identify gaps in
coverage and explore opportunities for collaboration and coordination. The
input from the workshop will go into a report to be prepared in the coming
weeks and posted on this website.
The first day of the workshop featured general sessions with high-level
overviews of current work taking place and panel / audience discussions of what
work remains to be done. Topics included:
Panel: U.S. Based Standards Activities
-
vehicle hardware
-
vehicle and grid communication and coordination
-
battery and fire safety standards
-
electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) standards
-
code development
Panel: International Standards Landscape
-
International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
-
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
-
European Union
-
Asia-Pacific region
Panel: Code, Conformance and Training Issues

code installation and EVSE equipment issues
-
qualifications / training of service technicians and first responders
Concurrent Breakout Sessions
The second day of the workshop featured concurrent breakout sessions in the
morning. Attendees selected one of three breakout groups to participate in:
-
Vehicle
-
Infrastructure
-
Support services / other
Focus questions and worksheets were provided to facilitate the discussions.
After lunch, the breakout groups reported back to the general session. These
findings will be included in the coming workshop report.
Interested U.S. and international persons that represent utility companies,
vehicle manufacturers, battery manufacturers, vehicle component manufacturers,
providers of EDV charging stations, battery switching station operators,
