Overview

The third in a series of ANSI-sponsored annual events focused on bringing together leaders of both accredited and non-accredited standards developers was held in Boston, MA, on June 20, 2007.

Since many SDOs are formed to represent national interests and consortia are largely created to serve the interests of an international membership, the paths of these two communities intersect on a regular basis. These interactions are often unscripted and may depend upon either official or unofficial one-on-one liaison relationships established between groups that are addressing the same or adjacent technical areas.

Each type of developer has competencies that the other may lack and experiences that its peers could benefit from sharing. Additionally, despite certain differences, SDOs and consortia have far more in common than once thought – especially since their memberships characteristically overlap. Common concerns include topics such as intellectual property rights management, governance, member recruitment and retention, and promotion of their work product.

This year's event was designed to be highly interactive, and featured brief panel presentations analyzing problems faced by all types of standard setting organizations (SSOs), followed by lengthier, and facilitated discussions involving all attendees. During a final discussion period, participants discussed ways in which consortia and accredited organizations can engage more frequently and productively to address matters of common concern.

The primary objective of this annual conference is to foster an open exchange of ideas between and among the various types of SSOs.
