Overview

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) held the third plenary meeting of its Identity Theft Prevention and Identity Management Standards Panel (IDSP) April 27-28, 2009 in Arlington, Virginia. The IDSP is a cross-sector coordinating body working to reduce identity theft and fraud by promoting the development and use of voluntary consensus standards and best practices.

The April meeting took a point-in-time look at the state of identity theft prevention and identity management. Panel discussions considered progress made on a number of fronts and looked ahead at areas that still need attention and that may be ripe for future IDSP work. Agenda topics included: best practices for measuring identity theft [see related article], implementation of the FTC red flags rule, customer authentication and the use of Social Security numbers, the need for identity verification guidelines [see related article], identity assurance life-cycle management, biometric implementation use cases, medical identity theft, and what’s on the horizon for ID theft prevention and ID management.
