The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has approved the creation of a new Technical Committee (TC) to address the development of standards related to combating fraud.
TC 247, Fraud countermeasures and controls, was proposed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in conjunction with the North American Security Products Organization (NASPO). The U.S. will hold the secretariat of the new committee that will focus its efforts on the development of standards in the areas of brand and intellectual property protection, identity management, and financial fraud.
It is expected that committee participants will include fraud experts, law enforcement, government agencies, criminologists, brand owners, manufacturers, integrators, and solution providers. The committee’s work will address issues related to fraud across a wide variety of industry sectors, including brand protection, intellectual property, drug counterfeiting, supply chains for products of value, authentication of goods, food supply chains, identity credentials, identity management, identity theft, customs and immigration enforcement, and financial fraud.
TC 247 is expected to meet for the first time later this year. Its work will complement the initiatives of ISO Project Committee (PC) 246, Performance requirements for purpose built anti-counterfeiting tools. PC 246 was recently established and held its first meeting in March 2009.
U.S. positions will be carried forward to both TC 247 and PC 246 by an ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG). As administrator of this TAG, NASPO is currently inviting participation from all relevant stakeholders.
