ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel (HSSP)
 |
The American National Standards Institute's Homeland
Security Standards Panel (ANSI-HSSP) has as its mission to identify existing
consensus standards, or, if none exist, assist the Department of Homeland
Security (DHS) and those sectors requesting assistance to accelerate
development and adoption of consensus standards critical to homeland security.
|
| The ANSI-HSSP promotes a positive, cooperative partnership between
the public and private sectors in order to meet the needs of the nation in this
critical area.

ANSI-HSSP Workshop to Explore Federal Strategy for CBRNE Standards
Reliable chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) countermeasures equipment is essential for the protection of life, health, property, and commerce. With an eye toward this critical aspect of national preparedness, in 2011 the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) collaborated with the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Commerce (DOC) to release the National Strategy for CBRNE Standards, outlining the federal vision and goals for the coordination and implementation of CBRNE equipment standards by 2020. On May 31, 2012, the American National Standards Institute Homeland Security Standards Panel (ANSI-HSSP) will host a Workshop on CBRNE Standards to provide an overview of the national strategy and the status of the related work being done in the federal government.

Releases Final Report on Emergency Preparedness for Persons with Disabilities
and Special Needs
For the millions of Americans with special needs, emergencies and natural
disasters present a unique challenge. Catastrophic events such as Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita and the 9/11 attacks revealed the crucial need for standards
and other means of guidance to enhance emergency preparedness for persons with
special needs. In an effort to advance standardization efforts in this area,
the American National Standards Institute Homeland Security Standards Panel
(ANSI-HSSP) has released a final workshop report outlining recommendations for
the timely development of standards to support more effective emergency
preparedness for all. The report consolidates the panel’s findings from a
series of 2010 workshops that examined various aspects of the standards and
codes needed for reducing barriers to accessibility in emergencies.

Expert Melissa Hathaway Discusses Best Practices and Policy Issues at November
ANSI Caucus
According to President Obama's
60-Day Cyberspace Policy Review, American business losses due to cyber
attacks grew to more than $1 trillion in intellectual property between 2008 and
2009, underscoring the urgent need for common guidance in identifying and
responding to cyber risks. In an ongoing effort to address this national
priority, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invited
cybersecurity expert Melissa Hathaway to serve as the featured guest speaker at
the Institute’s Caucus Luncheon on November 12 in Washington, DC. Ms. Hathaway
discussed recent developments in cybersecurity policy and addressed the
potential challenges of an overarching policy emerging from Congress in the
next two years.
Established by ANSI in February 2003, per its
charter the ANSI-HSSP has as its scope to catalog, promote, accelerate
and coordinate the timely development of consensus standards within the
national and international voluntary standards systems intended to meet
identified homeland security needs, and communicate the existence of such
standards appropriately to governmental units and the private sector. The Panel
supports the work of the DHS Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate’s Office
of Standards.
Participation in the ANSI-HSSP is open to representatives of industry,
government, professional societies, trade associations, standards developers,
and consortia groups directly involved in U.S. Homeland Security
standardization.
The roster of
Panel Participants is posted for information. Members of the ANSI-HSSP
