Identity Theft Prevention and Identity Management Standards
Panel

The Identity Theft Prevention and Identity Management Standards Panel (IDSP) is a cross-sector coordinating body whose
objective is to facilitate the timely development, promulgation and use of
voluntary consensus standards and guidelines that will equip and assist the
private sector, government and consumers in minimizing the scope and scale of
identity theft and fraud.
As outlined in
its Phase
2 Brief, the Panel holds workshops that explore the need for standards around
different facets of identity theft prevention and identity management. Workshops
typically involve making an inventory of existing standards and best practices,
identifying gaps where new or updated guidance may be needed, and making
recommendations regarding best practices or the desirability and feasibility of
undertaking standards development activity. Reports presenting findings and
recommendations from the workshops may drive future standards development
activity. The IDSP itself does not develop standards.
In
2008, the Panel convened a workshop on the need for identity verification guidelines
in connection with the issuance of primary U.S.A. identity documents. [see
related article] In 2009, the Panel
convened a second workshop exploring the need for standards and best practices on
how research companies measure and report on identity theft. [see
related article]
The
Panel also periodically convenes plenary meetings to report on the progress of
work underway and to identify topics that might be suitable for future
workshops. The plenary meetings are an
opportunity for information-sharing and networking with current Panel members
and newcomers to its work. In 2009, the
Panel held its third
plenary meeting that took a point-in-time look at the state of identity
theft prevention and identity management.
The
Panel continues to monitor implementation of the recommendations contained in
the ANSI-BBB
IDSP Report released January 31, 2008 – a resource for businesses,
government agencies, and other organizations in the fight against the theft of
personal and financial information. [see related article]
