Eco-Labeling/EPDs Program

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recently sponsored an independently conducted market analysis examining the current and future state of Eco-Labels and Environmental Product Declarations programs. The study confirmed a growing demand for an ANSI-led accreditation program based on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards that focus on determining the eligibility of a Type I certification schemes and Type III program operators. This program also covers the accreditation of eco-labeling certification bodies and conformity assessment bodies that verify and validate Environmental Product Declarations.

ANSI launches the following new programs:

TYPE I

1.0 Determination of Eligibility of Environmental Labeling Certification Scheme

An environmental labeling certification scheme owner seeking to achieve eligibility for its Eco-labeling scheme by ANSI is required to comply with the all applicable requirements and processes contained in ISO 14020, Environmental labels and declarations - General Principles, and ISO 14024, Environmental labels and declarations - Type I environmental labeling - Principles and procedures, as well as ANSI Procedure PRO-PR-164 -ISO 14024, Requirements/Process to Determine Eligibility of a Type I Environmental Labeling Certification Scheme, and PRO-FR-104-ECO-ISO14024, Application for Eligibility of Type I Environmental Labeling Certification Scheme. After completing the process of eligibility determination, the Eco-labeling scheme will demonstrate conformance with established international environmental declaration standards and the applicable procedures of ISO conformity assessment standards.

TYPE I

2.0 Accreditation of Third Party Eco-labeling Certification Bodies

Certification bodies seeking to be accredited by ANSI to conduct Eco-labeling certification will be required to conform with the applicable requirements and processes contained in ISO 14020, ISO 14024 and ISO/IEC 17065, Conformity assessment - Requirements for bodies certifying products, processes and services.

TYPE III

1.0 Determination of Eligibility of Program Operators for Environmental Labels and Declarations

Program operators for Type III environmental labels and declarations seeking to achieve eligibility for participation in the pilot program must conform with the requirements and processes contained in ISO 14020, Environmental labels and declarations - General Principles, and ISO 14025, Environmental labels and declarations - Type III environmental declarations Principles and procedures, as well as ANSI procedures PRO-PR-165-ISO 14025, Requirements/Process to determine Eligibility of a Type III Environmental Declaration Program, and PRO-FR-104-ECO-ISO14025, Application for Eligibility of Type III Environmental Declaration Programs. After completing the process of eligibility determination, each program operator will demonstrate conformance with established international environmental declaration standards and the applicable procedures of ISO conformity assessment standards.

TYPE III

2.0 Accreditation of Third Party Eco-labeling Certification Bodies that Verify/Validate Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

Certification bodies seeking to be accredited by ANSI to conduct validation/verification of EPDs are required to comply with applicable requirements and processes found in ISO 14020, ISO 14025, and ISO/IEC 17065, Conformity assessment - Requirements for bodies certifying products, processes and services.
