Director, Communications and Public Relations

Position Summary

The Director of Communications and Public Relations is responsible for the development and management of a fully-integrated program encompassing internal and external communications, and special event management. In cooperation with other departments, this position provides assistance with marketing the Institute’s products, services and, as appropriate, member recruitment.

Principal Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Strategic Planning

  • Work with ANSI senior staff, management staff, and governance leadership to develop and refine Institute-wide strategic priorities
  • Produce reports, presentations, and other needed collateral to communicate annual strategic priorities and accomplishments to ANSI governance leadership and broader membership

Program Management

  • Develop and track strategic objectives for areas of responsibility; manage program budgets; develop and maintain appropriate business, communication, marketing, and/or promotion plans.
  • As appropriate, develop new business contacts and explore opportunities for joint ventures.
  • Supervise program staff on a project-by-project basis.


  • Lead the Institute’s public relations initiatives, including the development and implementation of ANSI’s Communications and Public Relations Plan, as well as definition and management of its brand.
  • Manage the development and distribution of editorial content for print, web, and social media; member communications; print, electronic, and video collateral development and production; and related activities.
  • Coordinate the Institute’s media relations activities; ensure that all communications and key messages are current and consistent with the Institute’s objectives and goals.
  • Develop and manage content for presentations, speaking engagements, and the submission of bylined articles from ANSI staff and volunteer leaders.

Meetings and Special Event Management

  • Oversee the development of program themes, site selection, contract negotiation, and event management for all ANSI meetings, conferences and special events.
  • Assist other departments, as appropriate, with preparations for these events, as well as on-site visits from visiting delegations, content for public speaking engagements.
  • Facilitate ANSI participation at trade shows and related events.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree required (concentration in communications or marketing); further study a plus.

Skills and Experience

  • Five to seven years relevant experience; experience in a not-for-profit association preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Competencies in advertising, promotional strategy, Internet, e-commerce, social media, branding, and communications essential.
  • Knowledge of desktop publishing, video production, and print and electronic productions processes.
  • Previous design experience preferred.
  • Strong financial skills; previous budget management experience preferred.
  • Experience managing relationships with consultants and outside vendors.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, execute decisions, and work under stringent deadlines.
  • Computer experience (Microsoft Office) required.
  • Position requires travel in U.S. and possibly abroad.
  • Must be a team player.
