The scope of this activity would encompass standardization of products and services related to the rail industry, including construction; operation and maintenance of parts and equipment; methods and technology; and the interfaces between infrastructure, vehicles, and rail specific environmental aspects. Work in this area would exclude those electrotechnical and electronic products and services which fall within the scope of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Technical Committee (TC) 9, Electrical equipment and systems for railways.
According to the proposal, railway systems are gaining momentum as a means of transporting passengers and goods across national borders, thanks to their strong safety records and low environmental impact. DIN asserts that standardization activities must be undertaken at an international level in cooperation with any standards activities that are currently underway within regional and national arenas.
All comments on the proposal should be sent to Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy (isot@ansi.org). Feedback received by the January 13 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comments, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for formal approval.
