New ISO Prize to Honor Individuals Contributing to Standardization

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently announced the establishment of a new award known as the ISO Prize. The award, created on the recommendation of Dr. Boris Aleshin, ISO's immediate past-president, is intended to honor an individual outside the ISO community who has made significant contributions to the wider understanding and use of ISO voluntary consensus standards.

All applicants for the award must be individuals who are not members of the ISO Central Secretariat, or any ISO member, ISO technical committee, or national ISO mirror committee. ISO will present the award and a prize of 20,000 Swiss francs to the winner at the 2013 ISO General Assembly in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and will pay the winner's travel and accommodation expenses. The winner will be expected to give a presentation in connection with the award and must use the prize money to research or to fund the implementation of an ISO standard in a manner that will positively address societal, economic, and environmental challenges.

Applications for the ISO prize should include the following:

• A 300-word description of the applicant's efforts to bolster the understanding and/or use of ISO standards in a manner that has helped to address relevant economic, societal, or technological issues
• A proposal of no more than 150 words outlining a project that would address these types of issues by researching or funding the implementation of an ISO standard

All applications must be sent to isoprize@iso.org, and must be received before Friday, July 5, 2013. The ISO Council will be responsible for selecting a winner.
