Industry Week, a trade publication reporting on key insights in manufacturing and trends published an article written by Dr. Roy Swift, executive director of Workcred, an ANSI affiliate focused on strengthening workforce quality by improving the credentialing system.
Dr. Swift's article, “Getting Credentials Right," provides an overview of findings from a study funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). The study examined how credentials are currently used in hiring and retention practices, and how credentialing use can be improved to advance the manufacturing industry. The study, Examining the Quality, Market Value, and Effectiveness of Manufacturing Credentials in the United States, was released in July 2018.
In the article, Dr. Swift summarizes an important finding that many manufacturers do not know what credentials are available and how they are relevant. As the credentialing system expands, so does confusion around the potential of credentials to address a growing skills gap. The article also summarizes key findings, shares important data points, and offers specific recommendations to manufacturers.
