October 14 marks World Standards Day, an annual collaborative effort of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), that pays tribute to the efforts of thousands of experts worldwide who develop the voluntary technical agreements, published as international standards.
The 2019 World Standards Day theme, "Video Standards Create a Global Stage," underscores how international standards allow for greater sophistication and accessibility of video worldwide. Moreover, as ISO explains, "Having standards recognized and respected all over the world means that video encoded on one device can be decoded by another, regardless of the device being used. This introduces economies of scale that help to grow the market, giving the innovators the confidence to invest in new video applications and services."
To support the 2019 theme, the World Standards Day #futurevideo contest challenged contestants to imagine the future of video and capture it on a 20-second film. Based on a public vote, the winner, Mohammad Khodadadi of Iran, created a video that demonstrates how augmented reality helps us to think better. Watch the winning video and the three runner up candidates on the World Standards Day website.
