People on the Move

10/19/2012

People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.

ASHRAE, a member and audited designator of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has announced that Carolyn Kettering, director of member services since 1986, is retiring. Joyce Abrams, who previously served as group manager of education and certification, has been named as the new director of member services.

In her new position, Ms. Abrams will support volunteer leaders in the management of ASHRAE's recruitment, promotion, and retention program; the activities and programs of its 170-plus chapters and 14 regions; customer service; research promotion fundraising; and meetings and conferences.

Ms. Abrams began work at ASHRAE in 2006, overseeing development and implementation of a certification program to help promote ASHRAE as a leader in industry education and professional development. She also served as staff liaison to the Certification Committee and the Professional Development Committee. Before joining ASHRAE, she was an assistant vice president in the education and training division of the Atlanta-based Life Office Management Association (LOMA) - an insurance and financial services association - where she oversaw the design and development of credentialing programs, courses, and course materials, and managed the development and production of college-level textbooks and online courses.

Ms. Abrams has a master's of science degree in mass communications from Indiana University, and a juris doctorate and a bachelor's of arts in journalism from the University of Georgia.

Ms. Kettering was hired by ASHRAE in 1985 to serve as meetings manager, and was promoted to director of member services the following year. Prior to joining ASHRAE, she served as the manager of meetings and conferences for LOMA.

ASHRAE is a building technology society with more than 50,000 members worldwide. The society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration, and sustainability within the industry. Through research, standards writing, publishing, and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow's built environment today.
