Did You Know? offers a quick look at the broad scope of activities underway within the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Federation of members and partners, highlighting recent accomplishments and new resources related to standardization.

RIA Signs Alliances with OSHA and NIOSH
The Robotics Industry Association (RIA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has signed an agreement with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

The alliance was formed to provide OSHA and NIOSH with further technical expertise about robotics; improve awareness of hazards in the workplace related to traditional industrial robots and human robot collaboration systems; and identify areas where further research is needed to reduce workplace hazards.

"The robotics industry has a great track record of safety dating back to 1961 when the first industrial robot was installed," said RIA director of standards development Carole Franklin. "We're trying to make sure every integrator and user of robotics in the country is aware of the best practices described in our R15.06 standard. This new partnership with OSHA and NIOSH will certainly help us in that effort."

HFES Marks National Ergonomics Month with Free Access to Journals and Proceedings
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, is continuing its campaign annual campaign designating October as National Ergonomics Month (NEM). This initiative brings recognition to the work of human factors/ergonomics professionals, highlighting how their work improves quality of life around the world.

Professionals and students across the country are participating in grassroots, community-based activities to mark NEM, providing information and services to the community that introduce the benefits of human factors and ergonomics. Ultimately, HFES seeks to use NEM to introduce 10 million adults to human factors and ergonomics by 2020, promote professional development for its student members, and provide information on the topic to decision-making executives.

In conjunction with NEM, HFES is offering free access to all of its journals and proceedings for a limited time. Click here to register for a free trial. See HFES's NEM website for more information on how to get involved with NEM activities.
