In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:
Text-to-Speech Systems
Famed physicist Stephen Hawking is one of many individuals who communicate with help from speech synthesis. Speech synthesis can be produced through phonetic transcriptions or, more commonly, by converting normal language text into speech, referred to as text-to-speech (TTS).
To help the dental health community harmonize their EHR, the American Dental Association (ADA) recently published a new ANS. ANSI/ADA 1067-2013, Electronic Dental Record System Standard Functional Requirements, provides functional requirements for the dental health care domain consisting of information system support for direct and indirect dental services, supporting functions, and functions of the electronic dental system infrastructure. ANSI/ADA 1067-2013 describes end user-defined benefits such as patient safety, quality, outcomes, and cost efficiencies in terms of standard functions; promotes a common understanding of dental EHR functions upon which system developers, vendors, users, and other interested parties can plan and evaluate EHR functions; and provides a framework to drive the requirements and applications of next-level standards.
ADA, an ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer, is a non-profit association of dentists committed to the public's oral health, ethics, science, and professional advancement. ADA serves its members and the public through initiatives in advocacy, education, research, and the development of standards.
