People on the Move

2/14/2014
People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.

The U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC)'s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently announced that Patrick Gallagher, Ph.D., will step down this summer as director of NIST, under secretary of commerce for standards and technology, and acting deputy secretary of the DoC. In August, Dr. Gallagher will become the eighteenth chancellor of Pennsylvania's University of Pittsburgh.

As director of NIST, Dr. Gallagher is responsible for oversight of its many programs, activities, and initiatives, as well as its long-term planning. Prior to assuming his current roles, he served as director of the NIST Center for Neutron Research and as the NIST representative to the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), and chaired the U.S. government's Interagency Working Group on neutron and light source facilities under the Office of Science and Technology Policy.

In 2012 Dr. Gallagher was honored with the ANSI Chairman's Award, which recognizes outstanding accomplishments by a group or individual on behalf of ANSI or the ANSI Federation. He received his bachelor's degree in physics and philosophy from Kansas' Benedictine College and his doctorate in physics from the University of Pittsburgh.

NIST, a non-regulatory agency of the DoC, is tasked with promoting U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness through the advancement of measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. NIST plays an important role in coordinating standards and conformity assessment interests of U.S. federal government agencies.
