Annual U.S.-German Standards Roundtable in DC Highlights International Standardization Priorities

8/09/2017

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), together with the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), held the annual roundtable discussion on German and U.S. priorities for standardization in Washington, D.C., on August 3, 2017.

The roundtable included key public- and private-sector experts from both countries, and covered several common priority topics including current International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) areas of interest. ANSI is the official U.S. member body of ISO, and, via the U.S. National Committee, of IEC.

Experts also discussed sectoral activities related to services and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), and updates in standardization and opportunities for cooperation within the fields of smart manufacturing and cybersecurity. Another segment addressed the Chinese standardization reform. ANSI, which serves as the coordinator of the U.S. voluntary consensus standardization system, has been closely following the rollout of the reform through its international policy department, and has maintained close ties with the Standardization Administration of the People's Republic China (SAC) through frequent meetings and visits. Other highlights included discussions on the effort to realize digital transformation of standardization, and cooperative efforts that will be necessary among international, regional, and national standardization bodies to achieve this goal.ANSI and DIN also discussed concerns regarding the scope and work program of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and its cooperation with ISO and IEC.

Experts also focused on the G20 [see ANSI's recent coverage, G20 Leaders Statement Includes Reference to Industry-Led International Standards],and ANSI and DIN discussed plans for the 2018 U.S.-German Standards Panel, which is scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., in April 2018.
