The ANSI Network on Smart and Sustainable Cities (ANSSC) will hold a web meeting on Tuesday, August 19, to discuss ISO 50001, Energy management systems - Requirements with guidance for use, and energy performance indicators and their relationship to municipalities' sustainability goals. Aimee T. McKane, deputy group leader, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will be the event's featured speaker. Ms. McKane chairs the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 242, Energy Management, the committee responsible for ISO 50001, and played a critical role in the standard's development. She is also the ANSI representative to the ISO Technical Management Board (TMB) Strategic Advisory Group on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (SAG E), charged with making recommendations to the TMB on improving coordination across ISO on energy-related topics.
ISO 50001 is an internationally recognized framework that provides organizations of all sizes a way to efficiently manage and improve their energy performance. It outlines a systematic approach toward achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency and energy consumption. The standard includes requirements for measurement, documentation and reporting, and design and procurement practices for equipment, systems, processes, and personnel that contribute to energy performance. It does not prescribe specific energy performance criteria. It can be used independently or integrated with other management systems in an organization. Conformance can be established via self-declaration or certification by an independent third party.
Participation in the August 19 web meeting is open to individuals who have joined the ANSSC, a forum for information sharing among members of the standardization community, representatives of local governments, and experts in sustainable urban infrastructure planning and development [see related news item], and to invited guests.
