People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.

Roger Bernstein, vice president of state affairs for American National Standards Institute (ANSI) member and accredited standards developers the American Chemistry Council (ACC), recently announced plans to retire from the organization after 30 years of service. Mr. Bernstein will be replaced by Rudy Underwood, ACC senior director for the southern region, beginning in January 2015.

Before joining ACC, Mr. Bernstein served as vice president of governmental affairs for the American Plastics Council. He also held positions at the Glass Packaging Institute and at the University of Maryland, among other jobs. Mr. Underwood serves on the board of directors of Cobb EMC and on the section board of directors of the Society of Plastics Engineers, and previously worked as legislative director for the Georgia Farm Bureau. Mr. Bernstein earned his bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania's Washington and Jefferson College and his master's degree from Illinois' Northwestern University. Mr. Underwood received his bachelor of arts degree in speech communication and his master's of arts degree in public communication from the University of Georgia.

The ACC is a trade association representing chemistry companies and other related businesses. The organization seeks to support sustainable development and economic growth by providing communications services, political advocacy, scientific research, and other activities on behalf of its members.


ANSI member the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)'s National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA) division has hired Matt Shergalis as its new marketing manager. In his new position, Mr. Shergalis will provide marketing-related leadership in support of NSBA's efforts to bolster the adoption of steel bridges in the United States.

Prior to being hired by the NSBA, Mr. Shergalis served as a structural engineer with TLF Engineers Inc., where he oversaw the design of numerous engineering projects, including new construction, renovation, and expansion work on commercial and educational structures, among other work. He received his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Indiana's Trine University and his MBA from Indiana's Butler University.

The AISC is a nonprofit trade association and technical institute dedicated to supporting the steel construction and structural design industry through the dissemination of relevant and dependable information on steel-related topics, among other activities.
