Business leaders, academics, and government officials, among others, will gather in Washington, DC, on Thursday, October 11, 2012, for the annual U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day (WSD). The event, focused on the theme of Standards Increase Efficiency, will celebrate the role that standards play in the creation of a safer, sustainable, more productive world. Across the globe, governments, corporations, and other groups are working to reduce waste and support sustainability with the help of standards, codes, and conformance activities. Well-designed, globally relevant standards provide the technological basis for innovation and efficiency, resulting in more efficient services, reduced costs, and increased, harmonized trade.

The 2012 recipient of the award is Ronald L. Lynn, director and building official with Nevada's Clark County Department of Development Services, who is being honored for his contributions to the development and use of standards and building codes intended to ensure safe built environments in Nevada, the U.S., and worldwide.

First celebrated in 1970, World Standards Day is now recognized by nations all over the world. Each year, U.S. World Standards Day activities are organized by a planning committee made up of individuals from across the standards and conformity assessment community. The event is co-chaired each year by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This year, the International Code Council (ICC) serves as the event's administrating organization.

The U.S. celebration of World Standards Day is part of the 2012 World Standards Week (WSW) series of events, which will take place October 9-12 in Washington, DC. All other WSW events will take place at the Newseum's Knight Conference Center (555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW). WSD will be followed by a complimentary networking breakfast at the Newseum from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 12.
