ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposal to Create ISO Technical Committee Related to Road Traffic Safety Management Standards

3/13/2012
SIS, the Swedish Standards Institute, has submitted a proposal to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to convert ISO Project Committee (PC) 241, Road Traffic Safety Management System, into a new ISO technical committee with an expanded scope and work program. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on this proposal by Friday, April 13, 2012.

According to the proposal, the ISO technical committee would focus on standardization in the field of road traffic safety (RTS) management standards, with the following areas to be developed:

1) a requirement standard for road traffic safety;
2) RTS specific auditing requirements in third-party certification; and
3) implementation and guidance documents.

The first of these activities, ISO 39001, Road traffic safety (RTS) management systems - Requirements with guidance for use, is already underway and is expected to be released by ISO PC 241 by the end of 2012.

It should be noted that at the present time, there is no U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO PC 241.

All comments on the proposal should be sent to Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy ([email protected]). Feedback received by the April 13 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comments, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for formal approval.
