On July 20, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will host a free informational webinar from 2 to 3 pm EDT on the Internet of Things-Enabled Smart City (IES-City) Framework being developed by an international technical working group under the leadership of the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), along with several other partners including ANSI [see related news item]. The webinar's featured speaker will be Martin Burns, Ph.D., senior researcher in the NIST Engineering Laboratory.
Launched earlier this year, the IES-City project is analyzing existing architectural efforts from standards developing organizations and consortia to identify pivotal points of interoperability. The goal is to produce a framework document that can bring greater coherence to smart city standardization activities taking place internationally. ANSI's role as a partner is primarily outreach and awareness-raising to encourage technical experts to participate in the project and ultimately to use the working group's output in subsequent standards activities in which ANSI plays a role as coordinator of the U.S. standardization system and U.S. member to international standards bodies.
Dr. Martin Burns has been driving standards and implementations of standards related to smart grid and home and building automation - i.e., the Internet of Things (IoT) - for 35 years. Dr. Burns applies his skills and experience as part of NIST's Smart Grid and Cyber Physical Systems Program Office, specializing in data interoperability, IoT architecture, and federated test beds. He has led technical developments in support of the Green Button Initiative, in which NIST has facilitated the establishment of an ecosystem for the exchange of energy data among utilities, consumers, and third parties throughout the United States, Canada, and in Europe. He has been instrumental in the guidance and creation of the NIST Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) Public Working Group Framework for Cyber-Physical Systems. Additionally, he is working to apply the framework and related technologies to the design of a federated test bed architecture for CPS to allow collaborations within NIST and with academic, government, and commercial colleagues around the globe. Dr. Burns holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University.
The July 20 presentation is part of an ongoing series of monthly webinars hosted by the ANSI Network on Smart and Sustainable Cities (ANSSC), a forum for information sharing among members of the standardization community, representatives of municipal government, and experts in urban infrastructure planning and sustainable development. Following the NIST presentation, there will be an opportunity for Q&A and open information sharing among all webinar participants.
