IEEE Announces University Outreach Day to Engage Next Generation of Standards Professionals
ANSI member and accredited standards developer IEEE will host a university outreach program to engage university and college students and faculty in global standards development. The event will take place in conjunction with the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC) plenary meeting on July 17, 2012, in San Diego, CA.

The first IEEE 802 university outreach day will begin with an orientation session, followed by opportunities to observe the groups actually developing standards, and then a Q&A session for all participants. IEEE 802 is developing standards that will improve communication for communities everywhere, working towards longer battery life, faster internet access, improved health, and better security.

GBI Offers Webinar on EO 13514 and the Guiding Principles Compliance Program
The Green Building Initiative (GBI), an ANSI accredited standards developer and member, will host a webinar on EO 13514 and the Guiding Principles Compliance Program on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The free webinar will cover the mandates of executive order (EO) 13514, the background and details of the guiding principles, and how federal agencies can go about complying. EO 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance, was signed by President Obama on October 5, 2009, to expand the energy reduction and environmental performance requirements for federal agencies identified in EO 13423. The goal of EO 13514 is to establish an integrated strategy towards sustainability in the federal government and to make reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) a priority for federal agencies.

HL7 Holds International Education Summit July 17-19 in St. Louis
ANSI member and accredited standards developer Health Level Seven (HL7) is hosting a two-day educational summit for those interested in learning more about and implementing HL7 standards and related work products. The summit is being held July 17-19, 2012, at the Hilton Ballpark Conference Center in St. Louis, MO.

Members of the healthcare IT community at all levels of experience and expertise are encouraged to attend. Attendees have the opportunity to choose from two different tracks: HL7 Version 2.x and Meaningful Use or HL7 Clinical Document Architecture Release 2 and Meaningful Use. Both tracks will combine live tutorial sessions and hands-on work with the standards needed to comply with meaningful use rules. Tutorials will focus on HL7-specific topics such as Version 2, Version 3, and clinical document architecture (CDA), as well as general interest industry topics such as electronic health records (EHR) and vocabulary.

GIA Offers U.S. Military Veteran and Junior Gemologist Scholarships
To honor U.S. military veterans and to help those interested in careers in the gem and jewelry industry, ANSI member the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has established new scholarships for advanced gemological education as part of GIA's 2013 international scholarship program. The scholarship application period is open now through October 31, 2012.

A wide range of scholarships are available for on-campus and distance education programs, as well as for laboratory classes. Candidates can apply for scholarships that may be applied toward a broad spectrum of study, including courses in jewelry manufacturing arts or towards a graduate gemologist diploma.
