Student Event: A Simulation Exercise and Cooperation in Standardization Processes

12/12/2019

Join a standards simulation! Undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines are invited to join an educational event on Setting Standards: A Simulation Exercise in Strategy and Cooperation in Standardization Processes, hosted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and Purdue University, on Friday, February 21, 2020.

The full day event at the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis will expose students to the challenges and opportunities in the standards setting environment. Students will also explore the analytical and practical skills needed to engage successfully in standards negotiationsjust like in a professional setting.

Under the guidance of an expert facilitator, students will negotiate a standard for a fictional next generation technology and simulate a real standardization process through role-playing. Later, participants will evaluate and reflect on their experiences, focusing on lessons for real-life standards setting activities.

Student participants do not need any prior knowledge of any particular technology. Information will be provided to participants at the start of the exercise to help engagement.

There is no cost to attend the event. Please contact Lisa Rajchel at ANSI ([email protected]) as soon as possible to reserve a seat for one or more students.

Why is standards education so vital? Because standards and conformance play a critical role in the economy. Together, standards and technical regulations impact up to 93% of global trade.

Engaging and preparing the next generation of standards professionals is among ANSI's key priorities.

Students who understand the strategic importance of standardization are an asset to U.S. companies, industry, government, and U.S. competitiveness in general.
