ANSI Seeks Comments on New ISO Field of Activity on Remanufacturing Technology

7/25/2016
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has circulated a proposal for a new field of activity on remanufacturing technology. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all relevant and interested stakeholders to submit comments on the proposal by the end of the business day on Friday, September 2, 2016.

Submitted by SAC, the ISO member body for China, the proposal states that while the development of the remanufacturing industry is highly valued in developed countries, limited standards for remanufacturing products and processes have been formulated, slowing industry growth. The new ISO Technical Committee (TC) for would focus on remanufacturing terminology standards and generic technology standards for remanufacturing processes, such as dismantling, cleaning, inspection, coating preparation, forming processing, and assembly.

The initial three-year work plan would include the development of five new international standards with the following scopes:

  • Remanufacturing - Terminology

  • Remanufacturing - General technical requirements for mechanical products

  • Methods of quality evaluation of cores for remanufacturing

  • Technological guidelines of surface treatment for remanufacturing of mechanical products

  • Technical specifications of machining for remanufacturing of mechanical products

All interested stakeholders are invited to review the proposal, which includes listings of relevant standards as well as affected stakeholder categories that may benefit from or be impacted by the proposed deliverable. Please submit comments to Steve Cornish, ANSI senior director of international policy ([email protected]), by close of business on Friday, September 2, 2016.

Based on the input received, the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) will then be asked to approve an ANSI position and comments to be submitted to ISO before its October 12, 2016, deadline for voting on this proposal.

ANSI has published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC.
