Standards Alliance to Co-host Mexico City Conference on Regulatory Issues in December

10/27/2014
The Standards Alliance, a public-private partnership between the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will co-host a two-day event in Mexico City focused on regulatory practices and cooperation. The North American Conference on Good Regulatory Practices and Regulatory Cooperation is being held by the Standards Alliance in conjunction with Mexico's Secretariat of Economy (SE) and Federal Regulatory Improvement Commission (COFEMER), and the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD). The event is scheduled to take place December 10-11, 2014, at Mexico's Secretariat of Economy Auditorium ("Raul Ramos Tercero") in Mexico City.

The conference will feature remarks from E. Anthony Wayne, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico; Sara Hradecky, Canada's ambassador to Mexico, and high level officials from the Mexican Secretariat of Economy, as well as keynote addresses from Virgilio Andrade, director general of COFEMER, and Michael Fitzpatrick, senior counsel and head of regulatory advocacy at General Electric Co. Attendees at the event will also hear from Joseph Tretler Jr., ANSI vice president, international policy, who will serve as the event's master of ceremonies.

During the event, participants will have the opportunity to take part in a number of different sessions exploring a variety of topics related to regulatory practice and cooperation, including:

  • Examination of Principles of Good Regulatory Practices
  • Scientific- and Evidence-Based Rulemaking
  • Regulatory Impact Assessment
  • Public Consultation and Advancements in E-Rulemaking
  • Use of Good Regulatory Practices in the Elaboration of Technical Regulations and Standards
  • Case Studies/Best Examples of Effective Regulatory Cooperation in Other Countries, Regions, or Fora

COFEMER, Mexico's General Bureau of Standards (DGN), the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) are among the groups expected to take part in the conference's sessions, along with representatives from the private sector. The event's draft agenda is currently available online.

Interested individuals and groups may attend the conference at no charge; however, advance registration is required. To register online, visit the conference's official registration page. Representatives from regulatory bodies, affected private sector organizations, and government negotiators are particularly encouraged to attend.
