April 7 ANSI Cities Network Webinar Covers ISO TC 268 Sustainable Development in Communities

On April 7, from 2 pm to 3 pm Eastern, the monthly webinar of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Network on Smart and Sustainable Cities (ANSSC) will feature a report on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 268, Sustainable development in communities. Meghan Housewright, associate general counsel for government affairs at ANSI member the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), will be the featured speaker. NFPA serves as administrator of the ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to TC 268.

The work program of ISO/TC 268 includes "requirements, guidance, and supporting techniques and tools to help all kind of communities, their related subdivisions, and interested and concerned parties become more resilient and sustainable and demonstrate achievements in that regard." Notable among the committee's published standards to date is ISO 37120, Indicators for City Services and Quality of Life. TC 268 is now working on a new set of indicators for smart cities and a new set of indicators for resilient cities with initial comments on those due by the end of April. The webinar will review the work items open in the TC including in Subcommittee (SC) 1, Smart community infrastructures, and discuss strategy for further development of the TC 268 work program.

Meghan Housewright is the association general counsel for government affairs for NFPA. In that role, she supports the association in its relationships and interactions with the federal government as well as advocating for NFPA's mission with state governments. This activity includes following policy activities related to national standards initiatives, resiliency, smart cities, worker safety, and others. She has directed the U.S. TAG for ISO TC 268 since 2015, representing the U.S. position within the international technical committee. Prior to working for NFPA, Ms. Housewright worked as professional staff for the House Science and Technology Committee and was responsible for legislative matters related to technical standards, and R&D for transportation and homeland security, among other matters.

The ANSSC is a forum for information sharing on standardization developments for smart and sustainable cities in the U.S. and abroad.
