A newly revised brochure by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) details the positive influence standards have had on an increasingly wide range of consumer goods.
ISO and the Consumer is a four-page, color brochure that gives a concise overview of the interactions that assure consumer interests are taken into account in the development of a wide variety of standards. Consumer representatives aim to influence these standards so that products and services provide higher levels of quality and reliability, protection of safety and health, compatibility between products, consistency in the delivery of services, and other positive aspects.

ASHRAE Webpage Provides Information on Proposed Green Standard
A new webpage from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), a member and audited designator of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), serves as a one-stop resource for information on a proposed standard on building sustainability, ASHRAE 189.1P, Standard for the Design of High Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.
The page allows interested stakeholders to preview a draft of the standard, read the document's introduction, and learn more through a Frequently Asked Questions section. Site visitors can also sign up for related updates by email, submit questions, and more.

IEEE Launches Portal for Smart Grid Information
IEEE, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has launched a Smart Grid Web Portal, an integrated gateway to Smart Grid intelligence, education, and news from IEEE and other sources.
The Portal is designed for manufacturers, policymakers, educators, academics, governments, engineers, computer scientists, researchers, and other stakeholders in the power and energy, information technology (IT), and communications industries. It contains featured articles, videos, information on upcoming events, and more details for stakeholders wishing to learn more about the Smart Grid project.

OSHA To Solicit Comments and Suggestions at Public Meeting
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has announced that it will hold a public meeting to solicit suggestions and comments from stakeholders on key issues facing the agency.
At the meeting, OSHA will invite public input on issues including identification of workplace hazards, emerging or unaddressed health and safety issues in the workplace, OSHA's engagement with stakeholders, and more.
The meeting will be held on February 10, 2010, at the Department of Labor in Washington, DC. To attend and/or make an oral presentation, individuals must register by email at [email protected] by close of business on February 3. For more information, see the OSHA news release.
ASIS Foundation Releases Report on Preventing Burglary in Commercial and Institutional Settings
The ASIS Foundation of ASIS International, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has released a report outlining tips for preventing burglary in commercial and institutional settings.
The document addresses how to assess, manage, and respond to burglaries that occur at these sites, as well as the context in which these crimes often occur, and the perspective of the burglar.
"Research shows that large reductions can be achieved in burglary incidents and losses through interventions that are often simple and cost-effective," said Tim Prenzler, Ph.D., the author of the report.
