USNC Current Newsletter: Latest Issue Focuses on Lithium Battery Safety

4/20/2017

Expert Insights on How the Rise of IoT, Smart Cities Drive Battery Standards

TheU.S. National Committee (USNC) of theInternational Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has published the Spring 2017 issue of its quarterly newsletter, the USNC Current. The issue focuses on lithium battery safety, with insights on how the U.S. community has been active in advancing battery technology, spanning from research to standards, and testing and certification.

Expert contributors reveal how active engagement of U.S. and global in industry, academia/research institutions, government experts, and consumers drive and support the development of consensus standards for batteries. The newsletter also highlights the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution, which will drive exponential expansion of connected devices, and increase the need for battery power. And, as technology progresses, new standards for battery systems of drones, and EV batteries r-purposed into infrastructure and microgrids are underway.

This month, the Current's new quarterly column, Decision Report, provides easy access to recent decisions that have been made regarding IEC and USNC policies and procedures that directly affect its members. Also, stakeholders who support the newest members of the standardization community are encouraged to submit nominations for the IEC Young Professionals Workshop by May 1, with more details in the newsletter.

A committee of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the USNC serves as the focal point for U.S. parties who are interested in the development, promulgation, and use of globally-relevant standards for the electrotechnical industry. The Committee is also engaged in the assessment of conformance to standards, undertaking work in areas such as testing, certification, and accreditation.

As the U.S. representative to the IEC and many related regional standardization bodies, the USNC is a conduit to the global standards-setting community for technical and policy positions arising in the U.S. and brings issues from the global arena to the U.S. for review, consideration, and response. Strong U.S. participation in the IEC is critical to national competitiveness and the continued growth and innovation in U.S. electrotechnical industries.

The Current is the USNC's popular electronic newsletter, distributed to the USNC membership but freely available to all interested stakeholders. USNC members and other experts in electrotechnology and standardization contribute original content of keen interest to the U.S. standardization community.
