The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) congratulates Bert M. Coursey, Ph.D., who was recently selected as one of the nine 2016 additions to the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Gallery of Distinguished Scientists, Engineers and Administrators. Dr. Coursey was awarded at an official NIST ceremony on October 11, 2016.
Dr. Coursey is a guest researcher in the NIST Standards Services Group. Formerly, he served as the chief of the standards branch in the test and evaluation and standards office of the Science and Technology Directorate, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and DHS standards executive. He is the former chair of the ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel (ANSI-HSSP), for which he was a dedicated advocate for the development and application of voluntary standards for the critical and complex area of homeland security. He was also division chief for radiation standards at NIST in Gaithersburg, Md., and held other positions at NIST as a group leader for medical physics and a chemist. His work included radiation dosimetry, medical physics, and radioactivity standards, and he has over 90 publications on radioactivity standards and applied radiation dosimetry.
NIST is inducting Dr. Coursey in its distinguished gallery "for pioneering technical advances in measurement of ionizing radiation in the environmental and medical sciences, and for leadership in establishing a national standards infrastructure for homeland security." In addition to this recognition, Dr. Coursey was the recipient of the bronze, silver, and gold medals of the Department of Commerce, the recipient of NIST's Allen V. Astin award, and of the Edward Bennet Rosa award. He is the former president of the International Committee for Radionuclide Metrology, and a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the Standards Engineering Society.
