ISO/IEC JTC 1 Forms Two New Special Working Groups

11/16/2012

The International Organization for Standardization / International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1, Information Technology, announced the creation of two new Special Working Groups (SWGs) on Management and Internet of Things (IoT). The resolutions creating the SWGs were passed unanimously at JTC 1's 27th plenary meeting, held November 5-10, 2012, on Jeju Island in South Korea.

IoT refers to the use of data capture and communications technology to inform an international network connecting physical objects with their digital equivalents, allowing devices like Internet-linked thermometers to automatically provide data to associated websites and digital networks. JTC 1 established its SWG on IoT in response to growing interest in the field among standards organizations, as well as the rising importance of IoT to the broader ICT sector. The SWG is tasked with identifying IoT-related market requirements and standardization gaps, encouraging other JTC 1 Work Groups (WGs) and subcommittees (SCs) to address gaps in IoT standardization, and promoting IoT standards developed by JTC 1 to government, industry, and other organizations. The Secretariat of the IoT SWG will be held by South Korea.

The newly created SWG on management is intended to examine the organizational effectiveness of JTC 1 and to make recommendations that will improve this aspect of the committee. The SWG will review JTC 1's structure on a regular, ongoing basis, and provide advice on management and operational effiency to JTC 1 chairperson Karen Higginbottom. The SWG will also look at conflicts related to overlaps between JTC 1's various projects and activities, and will work with the chairs of JTC 1 subgroups, among others, to address any issues. The SWG on management will be administered by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), JTC 1's Secretariat.
