As the U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on the proposal by September 16, 2011.
The purpose of the new work item would be to establish terms and definitions to establish the basis for a common language for regulations, standards, research, training, licensing, registration, and certification in the field related to the credentialing of persons.According to the proposal, an international standard in this area would facilitate a common understanding among international stakeholders regarding what constitutes "competence" of persons and the type of credentialing that would be appropriate for various industries. Identified terms would also provide consumers a better understanding of expected proficiencies.
ICAC supported the proposal by letter ballot, noting that the intent of a resulting ISO standard would be for use in a variety of areas, not solely for personnel certification under ISO/IEC 17024, Conformity assessment - General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons, and therefore may have relation to existing work in a number of ISO committees.
Comments on the proposal, and whether ANSI should submit it to ISO, should be sent to Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy ([email protected]) by Friday, September 16, 2011. Feedback received will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comments, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for approval.
