In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:
Plastic Toilet Seats
Toilets may be an unglamorous topic, but the average person visits the loo, lavatory, water closet, latrine, or restroom approximately seven times a day - that's more than 2,500 times a year. During these visits, users encounter toilet seats of various shapes and materials: oval, round, padded, heated, glass, polymer, wooden, and plastic.
ANSI/ISA 12.04.04-2012 provides performance and test recommendations so that the enclosure and components mounted internally or protruding through the enclosure are unlikely to cause ignition of a surrounding flammable atmosphere, as well as recommendations so that users are unlikely to be injured by rupture of the enclosure due to failure of the pressure-regulating devices in the protective gas supply. ISA recommends ANSI/ISA 12.04.04-2012 be used in conjunction with NFPA 496-2013, Standard for Purged and Pressurized Enclosures for Electrical Equipment.
