Beat the Summer Heat with Standards

6/17/2014
As summer approaches and temperatures rise, keeping cool becomes a high priority. And while there are a number of ways to cool off and stay comfortable in hot weather, nearly all of them get a boost from voluntary consensus standards.

Whether you live in a fifth-floor walk-up or a suburban home, air-conditioning is a popular way to keep your residence comfortable even during the worst of the summer heat. A standard from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) member and audited designator, provides important safety guidance associated with the use of these devices. NFPA 90B-2012, Standard for the Installation of Warm Air Heating and Air-Conditioning Systems, 2012 Edition, sets down requirements for the construction, installation, and operation of heating and air-conditioning systems intended to prevent fire, smoke, and other related gases from spreading through these systems. Another standard, ANSI Y32.2.4-1949 (R1998), Graphic Symbols for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning, helps architects, engineers, and contractors to effectively install HVAC systems by providing guidelines for a standard system of visual symbols associated with this type of work. The standard was developed by ANSI member and accredited standards developer ASME.

If you live near a lake or the ocean, a trip to the beach can be a fun way to keep cool. ISO 20712-3:2014, Water safety signs and beach safety flags - Part 3: Guidance for use, provides important guidance related to the selection and use of beach safety flags and water safety signs, helping to keep your seaside trip safe. This International Standard was developed by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 145, Graphical symbols, Subcommittee (SC) 2, Safety identification, signs, shapes, symbols and colours. ANSI member and accredited standards developer the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) serves as the ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Administrator to both ISO TC 145 and SC 2.

To get the most out of a day by the shore, many beachgoers enjoy a refreshing boat ride. The American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has developed a standard that helps keep those riders safe. ANSI/ABYC H-32-2008, Ventilation of Boats Using Diesel Fuel, sets down design, construction, and installation guidelines for ventilation systems used by boats making use of diesel fuel and is intended to assist in the removal of combustion air and fixed gaseous fire extinguishing system discharge, among other uses.

Whether you're chilling out in your air-conditioned living room or feeling the wind rush through your hair on the back of a speeding boat, standards are there to help keep your summer safe and fun.
