The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), together with the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), held the second annual roundtable discussion on German and U.S. priorities for standardization in Berlin on November 30, 2012.
The roundtable, which included key public- and private-sector experts from both countries, covered several common priority topics including electric vehicles and e-mobility, smart cities and smart grid technologies, and civil- and cybersecurity. These issues impact global trade and are increasingly addressed at by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and other international forums. As a result, ANSI and DIN have sought to increase cooperation in such areas of mutual interest.
The roundtable was held immediately following the Transatlantic eMobility Standardization Roundtable [see related news item], and included many of the same participants from the U.S. side.

ANSI and DIN also discussed important changes to standardization policies in the U.S. and Germany, including updates to the European legislation regarding standardization and the proposed revision of Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-119, "Federal Participation in the Development and Use of Voluntary Consensus Standards and in Conformity Assessment Activities." A full summary of the roundtable will be prepared and sent to ANSI members in the coming weeks.
Participants in the roundtable agreed to continue cooperation in the format of these successful roundtables, and ANSI will welcome DIN and serve as host to the third roundtable in 2013.
