Did You Know? offers a quick look at the broad scope of activities underway within the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Federation of members and partners, highlighting recent accomplishments and new resources related to standardization.

Upcoming SES Webinar to Address Mapping Terminologies
SES - The Society for Standards Professionals, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, is hosting a webinar on terminology mapping, a process that facilitates knowledge transfer as well as search precision and satisfaction.

Mapping Terminologies: Increasing Access to Knowledge will introduce listeners to terminology mapping, and provide details on mapping standards, methods and tools, and sources for terminology mining. Attendees will also hear examples of terminology mapping in practice.

The webinar will be held on February 15 from 1 - 2:30 pm ET. It is free for SES and ANSI members and $50 for non-members. To learn more and to register, visit the SES website.

NFPA Report Details Fire Service Needs
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an ANSI member and audited designator, has released a free report that delineates the needs of fire service departments around the country. This report is the fourth of its kind, based on a survey in 2015-2016; previous iterations were conducted in 2001, 2005, and 2010.

NFPA's "Fourth Needs Assessment of the U.S. Fire Service" reveals that large fire departments have a notable need for training in fire prevention and code enforcement. Smaller fire departments, protecting populations less than 2,500, need training in traffic control and wildland firefighting. Many fire departments also report that equipment and clothing are old, and 43% of fire stations are at least 40 years old.

More information is available on the NFPA website, where stakeholders can also access a fact sheet and infographic on the survey results.

ASME Supports Engineering Students through New "E-Fests" Program
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has announced the initiation of E-Fests, programs that will provide information, services, and guidance to engineering students and early-career engineers.

E-Fests, designed as "engineering festivals," will help students to build their skill sets in areas of interest to high-tech employers, from project management and team-based problem solving to writing and analyzing sophisticated computer code. Attendees can participate in "hackathons" and design competitions. They can also be connected with leaders in their fields of interest to receive career guidance.

"A central mission of E-Fests is to prepare young engineers to be valuable members of a changing technology workforce - and to play a role in helping companies solve the complex challenges facing the world," said Paul Stevenson, senior vice president of ASME's Student and Early Career Sector.

AHAM Offers Tips for Users of Robotic Vacuums
The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, offers some suggestions for the most effective use of robotic vacuums on its blog. Some tips include:

  • Clear the room of obstacles before use. Even an errant sock can interrupt cleaning!

  • Close doors to keep the vacuum confined to the room you'd like it to clean.

  • Put the charging station in an area where the vacuum can access it easily. Many robotic vacuums will automatically return to the charging station when their batteries are low.

  • Ensure that the vacuum's sensors are free of debris before each use.
