People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.

Bob Vondrasek, vice president of technical projects of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), announced his retirement as of the end of 2011. NFPA is one of six American National Standards Institute- (ANSI-) Accredited Standards Developers that hold the status of audited designator, and a full organizational member of the Institute. A longtime participant and leader in ANSI activities, Mr. Vondrasek is well known in the standardization community for his dedication to the development of critical standards, codes, and initiatives for public safety. Bob has been a friend to many in the ANSI Federation over the years and is recognized as a dedicated and positive contributor to standardization in this country.

Mr. Vondrasek joined NFPA in 1984 as assistant vice president of the engineering division, and later assumed responsibility for the codes and standards operation. He managed a staff of technical experts, and oversaw 200 NFPA technical committees with more than 300 codes and standards. In his most recent role as vice president of technical projects, he was responsible for managing new technologies and homeland security projects, and was NFPA's main contact with federal authorities and other standards development organizations in these areas.

Prior to joining NFPA, Mr. Vondrasek worked for 16 years at an engineering and construction firm in the power and process industry. He served as project manager/engineer, managing fossil fuel, nuclear, and renewable energy power plants. He also previously worked for a major oil company in the chemical division as a process engineer in the production facility. He holds a bachelor's of science in chemical engineering from Lehigh University and an MBA from Adelphi University.

Mr. Vondrasek has served on the ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel (ANSI-HSSP) and Steering Committee, the Electric Vehicle Standards Panel (EVSP) and Steering Committee, the National Policy Committee (NPC), and the Organization Member Forum (OMF). He is also a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), SES - The Society for Standards Professionals, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

His many contributions to the development of safety standards as well as his personal integrity and commitment to the public interest have been recognized by his colleagues across industry sectors and by his friends and colleagues in the ANSI Federation.

ANSI wishes Bob the best in his retirement from NFPA, and looks forward to more of his outstanding contributions to the voluntary standardization community.
