ANSI Seeks Input on Potential New ISO Management System Standard on Project Management

3/23/2020

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) seeks input on a potential new field of technical activity within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) focusing on project, program, and portfolio management. As the U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI requests that all interested U.S. parties respond to this online questionnaire by April 25, 2020.

ISO Technical Committee (TC) 258 is exploring whether there is a need for a new, requirements-based standard, referred to as an ISO Management System Standard (MSS), for a systematic approach to managing projects, programs, and portfolios. Current ISO standards related to project, program, and portfolio management are guidance based.

With an ISO MSS, a business would have the option of being audited by a third party and, in turn, certified for its conformance to the standard. Some other popular ISO MSSs include: ISO 9001:2015, Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001:2015, Environmental Management Systems, and ISO/IEC 27001:2013, Information Security Management.

Based on the input received from U.S. stakeholders, the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (U.S. TAG) accredited by ANSI will present its position and comments to ISO TC 258 on the extent of a need for a potential MSS. If it is determined by ISO TC 258 that there is a need, the next step would be for this committee to develop and submit a justification study to the Technical Management Board of ISO for its evaluation and approval.
