DOC Symposium to Address Cybersecurity and Innovation in the Internet Economy
The Department of Commerce (DOC) has announced that it will hold a symposium on July 27, 2010, in Washington, D.C., to address "Cybersecurity and Innovation in the Information Economy."
The event, open to all interested stakeholders on a first-come, first-served basis, will allow attendees to discuss the relationship between cybersecurity in the commercial space and innovation in the Internet economy, with a particular emphasis on businesses that operate non-critical infrastructure. This meeting is part of a review being conducted by the DOC's Internet Policy Task Force.

ASSE LinkedIn Group Focuses on Safety Standards
The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has developed a LinkedIn group that addresses the technical and professional issues surrounding national voluntary consensus standards for A10, A1264, Z15, Z117, Z244, Z359, Z390, Z490, and the Z590 Canvass Standards.
The group will connect professionals that work with standards for cover floor/walkway openings; construction and demolition operations; motor vehicle operations; confined space entry; lockout/tagout; fall protection/arrest; safety, health and environmental research (SH&E) training; and SH&E general issues.

NFPA Journal Highlights Disability Issues for 20th Anniversary of ADA
The latest journal of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an ANSI member and audited designator, addresses the past, present, and future access issues of persons with disabilities in its cover story, "Disabilities: Where We've Been, Where We Are, Where We're Going."
The series of articles, highlighting the 20th anniversary year of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), profiles a number of individuals and their unique experiences dealing with different issues of disabilities. People profiled include a mother/daughter team advocating for home fire sprinklers, a transportation accessibility manager, an emergency preparedness expert for the deaf and hard of hearing, an Olympic hopeful, a fire chief, and a policy advocate.

ASME Director Discusses the Haiti Earthquake in Huffington Post Article
A recent article on the Huffington Post news website written by ASME executive director Tom Loughlin provides a follow-up on the earthquake that hit Haiti six months ago, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions to lessen the impact of future disasters.
The article addresses the factors that made Haiti's earthquake so deadly, including the nation's infrastructure. Mr. Loughlin emphasizes the importance of "locally informed and implementable standards" in developing countries to reduce the toll of such tragedies.

Approval of Accreditation as an ANSI ASD
ANSI's Executive Standards Council has approved the Building Performance Institute (BPI), a full ANSI organizational member, as an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer (ASD) under its operating procedures for documenting consensus on proposed American National Standards, effective July 13, 2010.
