Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Drinking Water Treatment Chemicals to Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

12/16/2019

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Drinking Water Treatment Chemicals

Did you know that nearly all U.S. states and Canadian provinces/territories require water treatment chemicals to show compliance through third-party certification NSF/ANSI/CAN 60? The American National Standard (ANS) encompasses the evaluation of water treatment chemicals, corrosion and sale inhibitors, well drilling aids, and other water treatment chemicals. Developed by a team of scientists, industry experts, and key industry stakeholders, NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 sets health effects criteria for many water treatment chemicals.

NSF/ANSI/CAN 60-2019/NSF/ANSI/CAN 600-2019, Drinking Water Treatment Chemicals - Health Effects (Includes: NSF/ANSI/CAN 600-2019), establishes minimum health effects requirements for the chemicals, the chemical contaminants, and the impurities that are directly added to drinking water from drinking water treatment chemicals. The standard does not establish performance or taste and odor requirements for drinking water treatment chemicals. The ANS, published by NSF International, was also designated as a National Standard of Canada in 2019.

An ANSI member and audited designator, NSF International writes public health standards and protocols and tests, and certifies products for the water, food, and consumer goods industries.
