ANSI Congratulates June Ling, Recipient of ASME's Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal

11/19/2010
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is pleased to congratulate June Ling, associate executive director of standards and certification at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), for receiving ASME's prestigious Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions in the areas of technical codification, standardization, and conformity assessment in the United States and throughout the world. Ms. Ling was presented with the award at the 2010 ASME Honors Assembly in Vancouver, Canada, on November 15.

The medal honors the memory of Melvin R. Green, an ardent supporter of industrial standards and Ms. Ling's longtime mentor. Mr. Green led ASME's codes and standards activities when Ms. Ling joined the staff in 1974. Together, Ms. Ling and Mr. Green helped to steer the Society's technical standards program to international recognition and prominence.

In her current position, Ms. Ling has overall responsibility for the development and advancement of ASME codes, standards, conformity assessment, and training programs. She oversees a unit that publishes more than 500 codes and standards and involves more than 4,000 volunteers, staff, and collaborators worldwide. Earlier in her ASME career she served as managing director of operations, director of pressure technology codes and standards, and director of nuclear and safety codes and standards.

Ms. Ling also serves on ASME's Standards and Certification Board of Directors and is a recent past member of the ANSI Board of Directors. A member of the Industry Trade Advisory Committee on Standards and Technical Barriers to Trade under the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) and the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), she has served on numerous technical and administrative standards committees, and has interacted with government agencies, industry, and standards developing organizations throughout the world. Through a DOC Market Development Cooperator Program grant in October 2004, Ms. Ling established a formal standards organizations consortium presence in China. She is an Honorary Member of ASTM International; a Fellow of the Standards Engineering Society; and an ASME Fellow.

"June's tireless and long-standing advocacy for consensus-based standards has had tremendous impact in fostering their acceptance in the U.S. and globally," said S. Joe Bhatia, ANSI president and CEO. "She is a true champion of the standards and conformity assessment community."

In 2009, Ms. Ling was awarded ANSI's prestigious Astin-Polk International Standards Medal, which honors distinguished service in promoting trade and understanding among nations through the advancement, development, or administration of international standardization, measurements, or certification.
