ANSI Accredits BPI's Home Energy Professional Certifications

11/11/2013
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) member and accredited standards developer the Building Performance Institute (BPI) recently announced the official launch of its Home Energy Professional (HEP) certifications for advanced home performance and weatherization professionals. BPI's HEP certification program was developed with the support of the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) and is accredited under ANSI's Accreditation Program for Personnel Certification Bodies.

The four new HEP certifications were accredited under an ANSI process based on the international standard ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024, Conformity assessment - General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons, the benchmark for personnel certification. These schemes include:

  • Energy Auditor
  • Crew Leader
  • Quality Control Inspector
  • Retrofit Installer Technician

The accreditation process is designed to provide assurance that each accredited certification body is accurately assessing the skills that are required to practice in the field by the certified professionals, bolstering the mobility of these professionals and industry confidence in the legitimacy and accuracy of these certifications.

ANSI's personnel certification accreditation program was the first such program in the United States to fulfill the requirements of ISO/IEC 17011, Conformity assessment - General requirements for accreditation bodies accrediting conformity assessment bodies, which represents the global benchmark for accreditation body practice. Accordingly, ANSI's accreditation program is recognized as a world-renowned leader in personnel credentialing. Since the launch of ANSI's Personnel Certification Accreditation Program in 2003, the Institute has accredited 43 personnel certification bodies across a range of industry sectors involving more than 5 million workers.
