People on the Move

People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.

The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has appointed Dean Garfield to the position of president and CEO.

In this role, Mr. Garfield will use his extensive technology and media experience to work with policy makers and ITI's companies on topics such as energy, competitiveness and trade.

The current executive vice president and chief strategic officer of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), Mr. Garfield has formerly been vice president of legal affairs at the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). He has also worked for the law firm Kaye Scholer in Washington, DC.

He received a law degree from the New York University School of Law, and a master's degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Administration and International Affairs at Princeton, NJ.

Garfield will succeed Rhett Dawson, who will retire in December after fifteen years as ITI president.

The National Fire Protection Association(NFPA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, announced the appointment of Maria Figueroa as regional manager in the newly created Fire Prevention Field Office.

In this role, Ms. Figueroa will support fire prevention activities nationwide, mainly sustaining the association’s work on the adoption of residential sprinklers ordinances.

With more than twenty-five years of fire-service experience, she recently worked as a firefighter paramedic with the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department in Doral, FL. A consultant in the areas of disaster management, business continuity and implementation of NFPA 1600, Ms. Figueroa has also been a trainer for fire prevention-related programs.

Ms. Figueroa holds a BS in business management from the University of Phoenix.
