“We are reaching out to a wide range of audiences to explain the value of HITSP and its work products,” explained Dr. Walter Suarez, co-chair of the HITSP-ECO Committee and president and CEO of the Institute for HIPAA/HIT Education and Research. “Raising awareness and understanding of the Panel’s Interoperability Specifications will affect how the standards are ultimately adopted and used by the industry.”

The first webinar, Standardizing How We Share Information in Healthcare: An Introduction to HITSP, will be held on Thursday, June 5 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This webinar will offer a solid base of HIT knowledge for consumers, government representatives and policy makers, healthcare providers, standards developers, vendors, and any other interested stakeholder.

During this 90-minute webinar, participants will gain an understanding of:

  • the importance of healthcare information sharing and what healthcare interoperability really means.
  • the need for standards in healthcare information sharing and how standards can help enhance patient care and contain costs.
  • work underway within HITSP — projects that have already been developed, accepted by Secretary Leavitt and implemented; new work, and what may be coming next.
  • how HITSP fits in with the National Health Information Network, the Certification Commission on Healthcare IT, other HIT organizations, and standards bodies.
  • why members of the HIT community should care about HITSP’s work and how any interested stakeholder can become engaged.

The session will be led by Dr. John Halamka, chair of HITSP, CIO of the CareGroup Health System, CIO and dean for technology at Harvard Medical School, chair of the New England Health Electronic Data Interchange Network (NEHEN), CEO of MA-SHARE, and a practicing emergency physician.

Participation in the live event requires both telephone and Internet connections. All webinar sessions will be recorded for playback via archives found on
