U.S. Department of Energy Issues RFI on Emerging Smart Technology Appliance and Equipment Market

10/29/2018

ANSI encourages relevant stakeholders to submit written comments by November 16

In an effort to gain greater perspective on the direction of the emerging smart technology market, the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) has issued a request for information (RFI), and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages its relevant stakeholders to respond by the deadline on November 16, 2018.

As noted in a September 2018 Federal Register, the DOE aims to gain greater perspective in the direction of the emerging smart technology market, including any energy efficiency trends or issues with respect to appliances or equipment incorporating smart technologies.

As manufacturers develop connected devices, opportunities for remote control access, intelligent energy consumption, and other consumer-driven technological developments are on the rise. The DOE's request pertains to a "better understanding of the state of the market for smart products and equipment, the impact of any such smart features on the energy consumption of these models, and potential privacy and security risks these features may represent."

DOE will use feedback to understand such innovation, and to avoid inhibiting it through its standards and test procedure development processes.

Submit written comments and information, to be accepted on or before November 16, 2018 by using the Federal eRulemaking Portal at http://www.regulations.gov.
