The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will host a webinar on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, from 1 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (EDT), to focus on the role of "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI) in fueling China's ambition in the global standardization sphere and industry competitiveness. The webinar is open to ANSI members, and will include a brief Q&A session.
At a Glance: The Belt and Road Initiative
In 2013, China proposed the BRI to improve connectivity and cooperation on a transcontinental scale. According to the World Bank, if completed, BRI transport projects could reduce travel times along economic corridors by 12 percent, increase trade between 2.7 and 9.7 percent, and increase income by up to 3.4 percent, lifting 7.6 million people from extreme poverty.
The session is designed to provide an overview of China's standardization activities in BRI countries and will examine the commercial and policy implications for U.S. industry. In recent years, China's BRI has increased in number, value, and geographic scope across more than 60 countries worldwide, including areas where the U.S. sees geographical significance, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Middle East, and Europe. Internationally, China's BRI encompasses many ambitious infrastructure projects, and provides significant opportunities for increased international cooperation on international norms, rules, and standards among participating countries.
