ANSI Staff Receive Global Retailer and Manufacturer Alliance Award

9/16/2019

ANSI Coordinates Efforts to Support Dietary Supplements Standardization

The Global Retailer and Manufacturer Alliance (GRMA) has recognized American National Standards Institute (ANSI) staff with the GRMA Key Contributor award for their role in leading standards coordination activities related to dietary supplements since 2018.

Voluntary consensus standards and related conformance systems help to assure safety and quality in dietary supplements, which is particularly imperative as the supplement market continues to surge. While market insights reveal the global market value for dietary supplements was $133.8 billion in 2016, that number is expected to reach $220 billion in the next two years.

In May 2019, ANSI convened the second of two cross-sector stakeholder meetings to advance safety, quality, and trust in dietary supplements through standardization as an adjunct to the regulatory framework. Attendees representing manufacturers, retailers, government agencies, trade and professional associations, consumer organizations, and others participated.

The discussions culminated in agreement on guidance principles of cooperation to move the industry forward, focusing on how standardization can help build consumer confidence in dietary supplements; support trust in the supply chain; and ensure safety, quality, and integrity of products and ingredients.

The 2019 meeting was a continuation of a meeting on December 6, 2018 that ANSI coordinated in partnership with GRMA.

ANSI was recognized at the 2019 GRMA Summit in Chicago in August.
