Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: From Golf Cars to Industrial Metal Containers

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, ANSI Online will publish, on an ongoing basis, a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Golf Cars
According to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, nearly two-thirds of all regulation 18-hole rounds are played with golf cars. For some, especially golfers with disabilities, these vehicles are a necessity. While layout and terrain vary between courses, golf car safety is enhanced when the machines are operated within a specific set of safety rules and practices, and the National Golf Car Manufacturers Association, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has developed standards to accomplish this.

ANSI/NGCMA Z130.1-2004, Golf Cars - Safety and Performance Specifications, provides safety and performance specifications for golf cars, driven by electric motors, powered by self-contained power sources or internal combustion engines, and specifically intended for and used on golf courses. Z.130.1 stipulates general safety practices, maintenance, fuel handling and storage/battery charging, operating safety rules and practices, and manufacturers requirements for these electric-powered and gasoline-powered cars. Industrial Metal Containers
Tupperware, baskets, laundry bins, pencil holders – in our daily lives, containers of all shapes, sizes and materials keep myriad items separate and organized. In manufacturing and industry, containers exist on an entirely different scale, and are designed to facilitate the handling of in-process parts and finished goods. According to the Material Handling Industry of America, metal containers are made from welded wire mesh, corrugated steel or a combination of the two. There are two general types, collapsible and rigid. Both stack vertically to conserve space when loaded while the collapsible also fold down to conserve space when not in use or to save freight costs when used as returnable packaging.

ANSI MH26.1-2004, Industrial Metal Containers – Specifications, applies to welded-wire containers and to corrugated and non-corrugated steel containers used for storage and movement of goods and materials through various interplant and intraplant material-handling systems and automated handling systems as well as generally accepted devices. These requirements are established to provide definitive guidelines for engineering design, construction and testing procedures for industrial metal containers. Testing procedures to determine container load and stacking load capacities, and cross wire weld testing are part of this standard. Buyers and specifiers are encouraged to use this standard to ensure equal comparison of various manufacturers' containers.
