People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.

The Toy Industry Association (TIA), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has named Edward Desmond to the new position of executive vice president for external affairs.

In this assignment he will lead the government affairs activities of TIA, representing the interests of the toy industry in the legislative and regulatory arenas. He will also organize and oversee the association’s ongoing efforts to address legislative challenges at the state level.

Mr. Desmond joined TIA from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), where he had been senior vice president for government affairs since 2000.

A graduate of California Western School of Law, Mr. Desmond began his career as legislative counsel for the former Illinois Republican Rep. Henry Hyde. He subsequently served as director of government affairs for several large corporations, including Ciba-Geigy and Hoffman-La Roche.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has named James Hedlund to the position of vice president of regulatory affairs.

In this role, he will help further the association’s policy efforts on behalf of the consumer electronics industry.

Mr. Hedlund was the former director of public policy for Yahoo! Inc., where he served as lead advocate on legislative and regulatory priorities. He previously held senior policy and business roles at T-Mobile, Level 3 Communications, Sprint and the FCC.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) welcomes Nikki Jackson to the Institute as a program manager for product certification accreditation.

She will join the ANSI Accreditation Services team, primarily reporting to Sandro Shelia, ANSI director for accreditation services, and to Reinaldo Figueiredo, program director for product certification accreditation.

With thirteen years of experience in engineering, product certification, fenestration, research in construction legislation and program management, Nikki formerly worked as an engineer with the National Accreditation and Management Institute (NAMI), an ANSI accredited product certifier, in support of their accreditation program.
